In readiness for updates to the internet connection in Student Village and Riseholme Park you’ll need to make sure your computer has the latest security patches and critical updates, and is running anti-virus and anti-malware software. Here’s a quick guide on how to get up to speed so you don’t suffer a break in your connectivity.
For Windows
- Get Updated: Visit Windows Update and follow the instructions to make sure your system is up to date. When prompted you can choose the ‘Express’ updating option to get hold of everything you need.
- Get Automated: When you visit Windows Update take a look at the right hand side of the page for a box telling you how your automatic updates are configured. If it shows a green shield everything is good, if it shows a red or yellow shield then read through the instructions to enable automatic updates.
- Get Secure: The University recommends that you use Microsoft Security Essentials for a one-stop solution to anti-virus and anti-malware software. Just visit the site, click the big “Download Now” button, run the installer and follow the instructions.
For Mac
- Get Updated: Click the Apple logo in the top left of your screen and choose “Software Update…”. Your Mac will then check for any updates and prompt you to install them. It is required that you install all security updates and all updates to Mac OS X, but it is not required to install updates for any other software (although it often improves speed, functionality and security).
- Get Automated: If you have several updates waiting it might be worth making sure automatic checking is enabled. Click the Apple logo, go to “System Preferences…” then select “Software Update”. Make sure the “Check for updates:” box is ticked.
- Get Secured: Mac OS X users must be running an anti-virus software package. A free one you can download is ClamXav.
For Linux
- Get Updated: There are too many versions of Linux to list how to update every single one, but you should make sure you are up to date. Your distribution should include instructions on how to update itself if the process isn’t automatic.
- Get Automated: Find out how to turn on your automatic updating, if it’s not already enabled. All mainstream distributions feature automatic updating.
- Get Secure: Linux users are not required to run any anti-virus or anti-malware software. Lucky you.
